Soy & Koi

The Brief

A “social sushi bar requires a logo, menu design, and extras.”

‘Extras’ gave me some creative freedom, so I decided to take a look at designing some takeout boxes’.

The Concept

The mood board shows the illustration style I wanted to go for the menus, the koi fish I saw that gave me the main idea for the concept and the colours that I wanted to go with throughout the branding.

These were my concept ideas for the designs.

I wanted to use a Soy Sauce bottle and a Koi fish in design so I incorporated both when coming up with the name of the restaurant. I remember that you get the little Koi fish soy sauce bottles in takeaway sushi and thought that it would be the perfect thing to use as the logo as it fits with the title and would be a fun stand-alone logo.

I knew early on in the design stage that this logo needed to be flexible in its design to make sure it could be used with a variety of different coloured backgrounds. Knowing this shaped how I approached designing each concept until refining the idea to its finished state.

Ideas

Here are some other ideas that I came up with and the typography that I was going to choose. I wanted the traditional Japanese style and colours to come through in the design but with a bit of a modern-day twist.

The Final Designs

Below is the takeaway packaging design. The colour packaging is based on the price range similar to how it works in pay-for-plate restaurants such as Yo! Sushi. Along with different chopstick designs and business cards.

Last but not least, the menus. I made a separate menu for the sushi so that their signature dishes really stand out in their restaurants.
